The
Resident Return Visa (RRV)
is a visa placed in the passport or travel document to identify permanent
residents of Australia to allow them to return to Australia after temporary
absences overseas.
All Australian permanent residents travelling overseas, who wish to return to Australia as permanent residents must apply for a resident return visa. However, for permanent residents who do not intend to travel, they do not need to obtain a resident return visa.
To qualify for extension of RRV, applicants who are permanent residents of Australia must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:-

Applicant has met the minimum physical stay requirement of at least two
of the last five years in Australia as a permanent resident. |

Applicant able to prove substantial business, cultural, employment or personal ties of benefit to Australia.
If Applicant has been absent from Australia for more than five continuous years since the grant of most recent permanent visa or since ceased being a citizen, Applicant must provide evidence that there was a compelling reason for your absence. |

One year (for applicants outside
Australia) |
If Applicant holds a permanent visa or
last departure from Australia was as a permanent resident or Australian
citizen:

Must provide evidence that proves you
have substantial business, cultural, employment or personal ties of
benefit to Australia;

If has been absent for more than five
continuous years since last departure from Australia as an
Australian permanent resident or Australian citizen, Applicant must
provide evidence that there was a compelling reason for your
absence.
If Applicant does not hold a permanent
visa and when depart Australia, applicant must meet all of the
following:

Has been an Australian citizen, or an Australian permanent resident, less than 10 years before lodging application; and

Provide evidence that proves having substantial business, cultural, employment or personal ties of benefit to Australia; and
-
If has been absent from Australia for a total period of more than five years since last departing as an Australian permanent resident or citizen, applicant must provide evidence that there was a compelling reason for absence.

Three months |
Applicant must:
-
Has spent at least one day in the last five years lawfully in Australia;
-
Has spent less than two years in the last five years in Australia;
Has been a permanent resident or an Australian citizen for the entire period spent in Australia;
-
Provides evidence that there is a compelling and compassionate reason for departure.
If Applicant has been outside Australia for more than three continuous months immediately before making the application, applicant must also show that there is a compelling and compassionate reason for the absence.

If Applicant does not meet the requirements above, but his/her partner or dependent family member is holder of valid Resident Return visa, Applicant may apply for at least one year RRV and the period granted cannot exceed the time remaining on your family member's visa.

It is important that applicants should inquire about their eligibility for a new visa well before their existing visa expires and before leaving Australia. Eligibility is liable to change over the years as it generally relates to the length of time applicants have been resident in Australia in the three years prior to their application lodgement.
